Patrick Frater was appointed Asia Editor at leading entertainment trade publication Variety in June 2005 and moved to Hong Kong summer that year. The move was part of a commitment by Variety to increasing and improving its coverage of the fastest-moving section of the world's film and TV industries.
Towards this objective, Frater was responsible for opening Variety's first branch office in Asia and has direct oversight of the dozen correspondents which Variety fields in this region.
Recently he was responsible for the launch of Varietyasiaonline.com, Variety's new website dedicated to entertainment business news in the region. He also oversaw Variety's first ever 'show dailies' published at the Pusan Int. Film Festival in October 2006 and will be responsible for the experimental e-Dailies launched at FilMart this week.
Prior to his arrival in Hong Kong , Frater was based in London , where he held various posts with Screen International, including International Editor.
Educated at the London School of Economics, Frater began his journalistic career with Investors' Chronicle. He lived in France for six years working as a freelance business, finance and media journalist with publications including The Financial Times, The Sunday Times, The Guardian, The European, Billboard, Media International, European Video Review, Film Journal, Le Film Francais, Blickpunkt Film and Music & Media.
He is also a regular TV and radio broadcaster and has consultancy experience with Andre Brouchet Conseil (ABC), the Economist Intelligence Unit and European Fund Industry Services (EFIS).
